WELCOME SWAN REAL TO THE RELATED RECORDS FAMILY!Swan is an amazing singer/songwriter and musician who has been playing in all kinds of fun bands and music projects for the past couple of decades. We met each other back in 2006 ( I think?) when she was playing in the freak-folk band Little Teeth, I put out a split cassette for her old short lived band Basement and Human Behavior in 2015 and since then she has played in a bunch of other great groups including country singer Myra Byrne and the amazing ska punk band Kmoy. Then a couple years ago I see her posting these videos of her playing solo and singing these amazing songs, but it wasn't until I saw her singing this power-pop song "growing up" that I was like "oh shit, this rules! I need to put this out!" 7" EP for "Growing Up" is officially coming out on Sunday, June 8th but I should be getting it in the mail sometime next week. EP includes 4 songs on the record + 5 sings on the digital download. HEAT IS MURDER SHIRT UPDATEShirt printing starts this Thursday so there is still a few days to pre-order the shirt you want in your preferred size before it sells out. The shirt printing with Metro Arts was delayed because of their Senior Art Showcase. SLUGS LP UPDATESomeone from Monotype got back to me a couple days after posting about their ridiculous delays saying they would be completing the order at the end of April and shipping out May 2nd. I let them know that it would be a lot better for The Slugs if they could get their records before then because their album release show is on May 2nd in London over 6 months ago! Thankfully, they wrote back apologizing and said they will get the records shipped out by April 25th so the records SHOULD be there in time for the album release show. Which also means, I SHOULD be getting the LPS in my possession at some point in May, then I will be shipping out all the pre-orders (which will include bonus records for every month you had to wait + a Slugs button set.) If you place an order before the end of April you will be getting at least 1 extra vinyl release from Related Records as well. Again, thank you for your patience through all of this. I really appreciate it and am so excited for everyone to finally get this record!
NEW HEAT IS MURDER SHIRTS!Here are some images with information about the new shirts. They are being printed next week by the printmaking students at Metro Arts and myself. If you have a business that is interested in wholesaling/distributing these shirts let me know as soon as possible, because I am only printing a handful of extras. UPDATE ON THE SLUGS LP!Alright so here is the timeline of what has been going on with me and the pressing plant since starting this order with them in August, 2024. Just to give you all full transparency on this album.
I heard through the grapevine that Monotype Pressing was acquired by another company in November, 2024 and if that is the case, it would explain why I lost my rep and why things slowed down significantly. This shit is out of my control, they usually do really great work and I (as well as sister label Gilgongo Records) have had a great experience with this pressing plant with good prices and average turnaround time being 5-6 weeks. But this is just so aggravating and I am so upset for everyone who has pre-ordered this LP and upset on behalf of THE SLUGS because they have album release shows booked in May and could've (and should've) had these records months ago now. So here is what I'm gonna do to try and make this up to everyone who has pre-ordered. I am going to add a Related Records LP (or 7") for every month you have waited since your order was placed. So if you placed your order in October, 2024 and I get the LPs by sometime in April, you will get 6 extra records (4 LPs + 2 7"s), if you placed your order in November you'll get 5 extra records (4 LPs + 1 7"), if you place your order before the end of March and I get the LPs before the end of April, you will get 1 extra record and so on. All pre-orders are also going to be getting a special SLUGS 1" button set. Again, I am so sorry this has taken so long and thank you for being so patient and understanding. new distro items
I have been adding more Trunk Space deadstock to the website over the past couple of weeks. Check it out if you are into DIY punk, indie rock, noise, folk, twee and experimental music from that early 2000's scene in Phoenix. A lot of deep cuts in here. RESTOCKSI restocked a handful of distro stuff last month. Check it out! Do any of you like 8-Tracks?I recently added a ton of 8-tracks to the Related Records Discogs store. Mostly country, easy listening and rock n' roll.
THE SLUGS HAVE A NEW LP!In August, 2020 I put out their 2nd EP on vinyl titled "Don't Touch Me I'm Too Slimy!" and a few months later they said "we've begun working on a new full length album!" and I said "Hooray! I cannot wait to hear it and I hope you'll let me put it out!" then after years of little check-ins here and there, Lib and Phoebe sent me an email with everything finally finished! All the tracks, 90% of the artwork, title, center labels...etc just like - ready to go! and it rules! The album is called "A Song For Every Feeling" and it's because they wrote all of these songs while going through some very big life changes - which brought on a wide variety of feelings and I think it came out perfect! You can currently hear 2 songs from the album on their bandcamp page. But the full length comes out officially on Friday, December 6th. **FINGERS CROSSED** that I have the records by then! They are shipping from Poland, I was told they went into production last week and am hoping to get some tracking info this coming week! Pre-Orders will be sent out as soon as I get them! I FOUND SOME DEADSTOCK STICKERS!I was cleaning up my office (aka Related Records HQ) and found a handful of stickers that had been sold out for a while.
NEW REVIEW FOR AND OLD RELEASE!
MARY OCHER IS ON TOUR!This is exciting for a couple of reasons. 1. It's Mary Ochers first time playing in the USA in over 5 years! 2. Her new albums are so good! and are both getting a special limited edition cassette version released on Related Records specifically for this tour! (There won't be a pre-order available because 90% of the stock is going to Mary directly for this tour.) 01.16.25 - LA - 2220arts - tickets 01.17.25 - Long Beach - Vine 01.18.25 - San Diego - Soda Bar - tickets / RSVP 01.19.25 - Phoenix - MySpace - tickets // RSVP 01.21.25 - San Francisco - The Lab - tickets / RSVP 01.23.25 - Portland - The Fixin' To - tickets 01.25.25 - Seattle - Fremont Abbey Arts Center - tickets / RSVP 01.26.25 - Vancouver - The Cobalt 01.28.25 - Calgary - Palomino 04.02.25 - Belfast - Black Box Theatre 05.02.25 - Glasgow - Glad Cafe - tickets/RSVP 06.02.25 - Newcastle - Cobalt Studios 07.02.25 - Manchester - Eagle Inn 08.02.25 - Birmingham - Centrala - tickets 09.02.25 - London - Cafe Oto - tickets 10.02.25 - Hull - The New Adelphi - tickets / RSVP 12.02.25 - Brighton - The Rose Hill - tickets / RSVP IF YOU LIVE IN ARIZONA...You should come to these upcoming events that Related Records will be at. Related Records will be set up at PHX FAT MARKET on Saturday December 7th. I will be sharing a tent with my favorite local jewelry maker LATER OPERATOR! We will each have a table set up with our goods PLUS we will have a big clothing rack filled with our clothes (sizes XL-6XL) that will be for sale. Then on Sunday, January 19th I am booking the Mary Ocher Phoenix show! It has been over 10 years since she last played in Phoenix and every time has just been so cool/memorable. The local support is from 2 of my favorite local bands (both of which are pretty new bands, but not new to performing)
GOHNE - featuring Lonna Kelley (from Cherie Cherie, Giant Sand and frequent collaborator/featured guest with Treasure Mammal and almost every artist on Moone Records), Jay Hufman (from Gene Tripp, Cherie Cherie and frequent collaborator with Golden Boots), Wally Boudway (from Wooden Indian, Slow Moses, Califone and frequent collaborator with Yairms as well as like... every other super talented musician in Phoenix) - Here is an okay video of them playing inside an old train station for Moone Records Fest last year. Every time I have seen them play it has been haunting and beautiful. I AM MISS HAVISHAM - this band features 2 artists who I have been a fan of for years but still don't know all that well. Bailey (aka Kylo Gun) and Ava Fox have both been playing in local punk bands since they could hold their instruments and they both have had that fierce / honest / no bullshit type attitude about them that seems very genuine and real to me, so whenever they have something new they are working on, I try to book them when it makes sense and works out. This new project though is the coolest + most exciting to me, with I AM MISS HAVISHAM I see and hear elements of bands like Elastica, Pere Ubu, Mika Miko, Automatic, The Muffs, but with a good mix of like art school and a sprinkle of Negativland mixed in. Watch this video of their first show and you'll see what I mean - I think they really should be playing every good show happening in Phoenix right now, cause this shit rules. In May of 2023 Related Records is going to be celebrating 10 years of being a record label! WOW! I know! incredible right?! I almost didn't make it! But this year I got a bunch of stuff planned and hopefully, all of these things happen! Anyway, here's this years tentative release schedule..
WHAT ELSE???Well at some point in the year there will be a Volume 2 of the Recherche compilation that will include unreleased tracks from Related Records (and Related Records adjacent) artists on CD, And a limited edition Lathe 7" for Fatty Cakes & The Puff Pastries featuring 2 brand new songs by them. And sometime in the fall I will be releasing a song-for-song tribute compilation to The House Martins "London 0 Hull 4" Record. If you would like to contribute something to that, let me know what song you would like to do, so I can make sure its not already claimed. Plus I plan on releasing a cassette tape featuring all the A-Sides and B-Sides from all of the Belle Stars singles. A new Zine from The Terri's!, at least 1 more season of The Best Friends Podcast, and 1-2 more issues of Testimony! AAANNNDDDD!!!! I should probably get back to releasing more cool/forgotten media on Heirloom Records THAT'S NOT ALL!!I listed a bunch of Test Presses for you obsessive vinyl collecting weirdos.
Here is some other stuff that sold...
I want to officially introduce you to the newest members of the Related Records Family! BARRY!!! from England! Their new 45rpm single "Neolithic Homosex b/w No More Boys" is finally here and it sounds amazing and you can pick it up here or here (if you live in the USA) or here (if you live in the UK) All the US presales went out today and the UK ones will be sent out as soon as the band gets their copies later this week
NEW RELEASE!Barry is a 4 piece queer-pop group from London. I was introduced to them from friends/label-mates The Pooches and The Slugs! and I instantly feel in love! the music they produce reminds me of that glorious pop sound that was so popular in the early 2000's but yet so incredibly unapologetic for their weirdness and queerness in the most refreshing and pleasant way! The official release date is in December but we are hoping the records will be here sometime between October-November, but with the way vinyl is these days WHO REALLY KNOWS! it sucks! (I was originally quoted as them being done by August, then October so...) ANYWAY! check it out here! and pre-order the 7". also be sure to download their first EP which came out on Permanent Slump records in 2019 LOW STOCK ALERT!The following items are almost sold out,
Pretty much since the beginning of the Related Records label, Dimitri and Ryan from world famous band Golden Boots have been big supporters of the label, and for the past 2 years they have had their own radio show in Tucson+the internet called "Burning Brain Radio" and on that show they have continuously played Related Records artists. They have asked me to come up with a solid 20 minutes or so of music for this upcoming episode on Saturday August 14th and I just wanted to mention here that I am real excited about it because it is entirely made up new and soon to be released music from Related Records. So if you want a sneak peek at what is coming next for Related Records, be sure to tune in. I'll post about it on instagram for sure when it happens.
MORE CRAZY TAPE DEALS!I acquired some vintage tape holders/organizers and I decided to sell them on the Related Records website filled with tapes! Each one comes with an assortment of Related Records tapes, mix tapes and other random stuff. Click the images for full descriptions and to purchase. I also want to remind you that I still have a handful of the 15 Random Tapes box and 20 Random Tapes boxes available. Also have you checked out the new Books section of the Related Records online store? It's only got 5 things on it right now, but new things are going to be added in the next few months including a new album/zine from Dinosaur Love and a zine from Liberty Hodes of The Slugs! In the meantime, check out In Defense of Ska or Very Terri Issue #1 (both of which include a download code for the Ska Mix For Q mix tape that sold out within a few hours earlier this month), Moop by Mary Ocher, The Legend of Wild man Fischer, or The Gospel by Dinosaur Love
I've got bad news and i've got some good news regarding the new Treasure Mammal LP "Grammy Nominated" BAD NEWS - Due to some hiccups with the pressing plant, the release date for this record has been pushed back to November 7th which is also the 17 year anniversary for the Treasure Mammal music and performance project. GOOD NEWS - We released a new song from the album for you to stream, its called "Team Work" and it was co-written by Owen Evans who you will know from the indie pop bands ROAR and Asleep In The Sea (who our sub label "Heirloom Records" just did a digital release of their album Avenue). Anyway, check it out. Its a fun inspirational song that hopefully makes your day a little better. Make sure to get your pre-orders in, those will be shipped out as soon as the records arrive in my custody (which should be mid-October) The Gold version that comes with a cassingle of "Online Dating" is running low, so pick those up ASAP. The Slugs "Don't Touch Me, I'm Too Slimy!" has gotten some great reviews recently from Maximum Rock N' Roll and Yellow Green Red. Plus WFMU has been playing songs from this 7" in heavy rotation since it's release last month! I'm really proud of them and thankful for the good press and for all of you who have downloaded and purchased the album over the past few weeks. And if you haven't heard it yet, you're missing out. "Worn Out" Mix Tape
A couple weeks ago I ruined two of my favorite pairs of pants and rather than throw them away I decided to make mix tapes with them. “Worn Out” is a mix tape made up of songs that have made a big impact on me, that have also come out over the last 2 years. Mix tapes range from 50ish to 60ish minutes and come in random colored cassette shells. Every mix at least features songs from Whitmore Thomas, Clipping, Special Interest, The Ex-Bats, Sailor Poon, Bruce Lee Band, Jeffrey Lewis, Crush Material, Barry, The Slugs, Yairms, Mooey Moobau, Jpegmafia and Kitten Forever most also features at least 7+ more songs. Anyway, it’s a fun mix. If you live in the USA it’s only $5, $12 if you live anywhere else. That includes shipping. It pretty much just covers the cost for everything. Not looking to profit off this, just spread some joy, help the post office a little bit and not let things go to waste. If you want a copy, you can DM @related_records on Instagram. Venmo @relatedrecords or PayPal paypal.me/RelatedRecords and in case you were wondering... Red = Big Bud Press work pants (purchased in 2018) Black = Levis Slim Fit Jeans (purchased in 2015) BANDCAMP DAY IS HERE AGAIN!100% of the sales from downloads on the Related Records Bandcamp page this weekend will be going towards Mutual Aid PHX. If you would just like to donate, I am doing a costco run for supplies on Saturday or Sunday, so you can send donations here this weekend and know that's where the money is going, I will show my reciepts on the Related Records Instagram stories. There is also still "Heat Is Murder" shirts available in sizes Small-3XL and all the money from these shirts goes towards this cause as well. Last month, I did a run & raised close to $500.
and don't forget...HERE COME THE SLUGS!!I am so excited to announce officially that the newest artist to join Related Records is The Slugs from the UK! I first heard this group last November, I saw a video of them screaming "GIVE US! GIVE US YOUR SLUG MONEY!" for 15 seconds and was hooked! I followed them on Instagram, downloaded all their music on Bandcamp and after listening to all 3 EP's I sent them a message saying I want to release their music for them. By January, I had paid for their 2nd EP "Don't Touch Me, I'm too Slimy!" to be pressed as a 7". This was supposed to be ready to go by April, but because of COVID it wasn't ready until August. BUT THAT'S OKAY! it's finally here! The Slugs are planning on doing a Q+A tomorrow (8/28 at 9PM in the UK / 1PM Pacific Coast) on the Related Records instagram and then sometime next week they will be reunited for the first time in months and will be live streaming a special performance. If you live in Europe, I suggest purchasing the 7" directly from them on their bandcamp page.
