BANDCAMP FRIDAY!

Today is the first bandcamp Friday in a while. So I felt like maybe I should write something to encourage people on this list to spend money buying music today, since all the bandcamp fees are waived from artist payouts on sales made today. Which is pretty cool I think. I've had many conversations with artists over the last 6 years about how helpful this has been for them (especially in 2020-2022 when they weren't touring.) So first I am going to write about some of the recent releases available from Related Records Artists, then I am going to write about some non-Related stuff I am enjoying on bandcamp right now.

ICARUS PHOENIX

"Choke"

Drew Danburry's new rock band "Icarus Phoenix" has a new dancy rock song that rules! It features artwork from his Funny Uncles​ co-conspirator JR Boyce too! The single comes with an acoustic demo of the song which sounds more like the solo Drew Danburry sound you may be familiar with. It's cool to hear both so you can hear how the song has evolved.

YAIRMS

"Computer Say"

It is always so nice to hear new music from Jeremy and this song is so good, its beautiful, its driving, its cynical, it's brilliant. This single is part of the Flower Sounds label's "summer solstice" series. I am unfamiliar with this label, but I am going to take a dive into their back catalog since they put out something from Yairms. I also see they've put out stuff from The Lentils​ which rules.

U.S. HIGHBALL

"God Save The Kelvin Wheelies"

If you are a fan of U.S. Highball, I don't think you would disagree with the comparison to CAKE in that, yes, all the albums are basically the same thing BUT you still have your favorites and preferences. This new U.S. Highball record I would rate as #2 in their catalog, tied with "A Parkhead Cross Of The Mind" and right behind their debut "Great Record" - it's just so god damn fuckin pleasant. Like a lofi Belle & Sebastian, I could listen to this anytime and feel good, it would never feel like an inappropriate time to put a U.S. Highball album on and the Kelvin Wheelies album is the current one I keep going back to.IT ALSO features other Related Records family members - Helen and Kathy from Barry and Sassyihiya​ fame!

A very cool, new, lo-fi track from Swan Real. Synth, Guitar, Bass and Vocals recorded through a Yamaha MQ802. Lyrically the song is painting vivid images in a way that I love Swan's music for since she was playing in Little Teeth and Basement.

MARY OCHER

This is a new album album of Mary's beautiful, haunting, minimalist piano songs. Recorded on a grand piano in Berlin. It includes a new recording of one of the songs from her Related Records debut album "Eden" which came out in 2014. The mesmerizing "(As Free As) The Great Outdoors"

FISHBOY

"Bravest Neighbor"

Eric's music is fun and smart and peaks my feels great for my ADHD/story telling brain. All the songs on each of his albums tell a story with each character in the story being the focus of each song, but the more you listen to the album the more you notice about each of the characters and the story the album is telling. All that coupled with fun, indie, twee, pop music. Every album is a chef's kiss of brilliance. I've listened to this album probably 5 times so far, and my favorite songs have gotta be "Danny Da Champ (as told by Damon)" and "Diana's Jacket (as told by Danny Da Champ)" - in case you cant tell by those song titles, Danny Da Champ is the character in this story I connect the most with. The main theme for this album is about bravery and a small group of neighbors who all think great things about one another but never really vocalize it, except to themselves and in a book in their little neighborhood library where they anonymously write who they think is the bravest neighbor. 

VARIOUS ARTISTS

"If I Had a Pair of Wings: Jamaican Doo Wop, Vol. I - III"

This is a 42 track compilation of Jamaican Doo Wop music, mostly from the 1960's and features some of my favorite ska and rocksteady artists like Alton Ellis, Millie Smalls, The Blues Busters, and Jimmy Cliff singing sweet and romantic tunes. I've been listening to this for the past week and I cannot get enough.

TOM GRRRL

"Genesis, WI"

Daniel had this project years and years ago that I love called Jehova's Fitness. The album "The Village In My Mind" is one of my most played CDR's in my collection. When Daniel came out with new music under the moniker Tom Grrrl - I wanted it to be the same, because I loved it so much and admired Daniels songwriting so much. But it's not, and while I still enjoyed it and would throw on the "Rough Demonstrations" cassette I have ever once in a while. I never gave it the full respectful listen, I think it deserves. Until recently, I put this album from 2020 on and was blown away.  I listened to it again and again and again and writing about it now, I kinda wanna listen to it again.
